8 Days Southern Tanzania Road Safari
Get off the beaten track and explore the true wilderness areas of Southern Tanzania: the vast Selous Game Reserve, Mikumi and Ruaha National Parks. This is where endangered wild dogs roam, elephants, gather, hippo and crocodile bask on the river banks, and a multitude of kudu, zebra, wildebeest, impala, and buffalo graze in unspoiled landscapes of wild beauty. Experience the mystery and beauty of the ancient forests of the Udzungwa Mountains to glimpse another very different African landscape.
Detailed 8 Days Sountern Tanzania Road Safari
Day 1 & 2: Nyerere National Park
We collect you from your hotel in Dar es Salaam in one of our comfortable safari vehicles and set off for the Selous Game Reserve; a vast, untouched reserve stretching over more than 5% of Tanzania’s total area. Famous for its wild dogs, the reserve is home to roaming herds of elephants and some of the last black rhino of the area. The wide River Rufiji provides a permanent water source for a host of wildlife and a rich variety of bird life. We explore with a fascinating afternoon game drive, before settling into our comfortable Campsite with dinner eaten under the stars. The next morning we rise early for a stunning dawn game drive before breakfast. We view the diverse wildlife along the river banks from the exciting perspective of a Boat Safari on the River Rufiji, watching hippos lolling on the shore, crocodiles lurking and various animals drinking from the banks. We return to our camp for another delicious meal under the wide night sky.
Day 3 & 4: Mikumi
After breakfast, we set off for Mikumi National Park, where the open horizons of the Mkata floodplain are home to abundant wildlife, including wildebeest, impala, zebra, eland, elephant, and giraffe. We enjoy a fascinating game drive en-route, before reaching our comfortable Campsite.
The next day we explore the various landscapes with a full day game drive with a picnic lunch, perhaps sighting the greater kudu, the lion that surveys the plains and some of the 400 recorded bird species. We return to our camp for dinner and stargazing around the camp fire.
Day 5 & 6: Ruaha
After breakfast we set off for Ruaha National Park, a vast tract of rugged, dry bush and miombo woodland, crossed by the Great Rift Valley and watered by the Great Ruaha River and its tributaries. It supports an impressive array of predators: lion, cheetah, leopard, hyena and wild dogs preying on the herds of gazelle, kudu, and antelope. We explore with an afternoon game drive before reaching our new camp for dinner. The following day we explore further with a full day of game drives.
Day 7: Udzungwa
After breakfast, we set off to Udzungwa, a beautiful mountainous area of ancient forests where waterfalls plunge, and tall trees provide sun-dappled shade with an abundance of bird and plant life. After lunch on arrival, we enjoy an afternoon walk to Sanje Waterfalls, with misty spray rising to the canopy, perhaps even spotting some of the eleven
primate species to be found here or the majestic forest elephants. We return to our Campsite for a fabulous dinner.
Day 8:Depart
After breakfast, we depart to return to Dar-es-salaam for the end of our Southern Tanzania journey.
