15 Days Mount Kilimanjaro Machame Trek, Big Five Safari & Zanzibar Beach Holiday

Scale the snow-dusted crater rim of the “Roof of Africa”, track lions through the dramatic volcanic amphitheater of Ngorongoro Crater, and sink into barefoot luxury along the turquoise waters of Zanzibar. This handcrafted 15-day Tanzania Bush-to-Beach Mega-Expedition brings together the country’s most celebrated travel highlights into one continuous, high-altitude, and coastal journey.

Begin by taking on the legendary 6-day Machame Route (“Whiskey Route”)—celebrated for its dramatic alpine panoramas, rich biodiversity, and natural “climb high, sleep low” acclimatization profile. After claiming your official Uhuru Peak (5,895m) summit certificate, transition into a custom 4×4 Safari Land Cruiser to track tree-climbing lions in Lake Manyara, witness dense predator concentrations in the Ngorongoro Crater, and marvel at massive elephant herds among the ancient baobabs of Tarangire National Park.

Finally, board a domestic flight to the spice island of Zanzibar, checking into the oceanfront Bluebay Beach Resort & Spa for four days of sun, sand, and Indian Ocean relaxation.

15 Days Kilimanjaro Machame Trek Tanzania Safari & Zanzibar Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Tanzania – Transfer to Arusha

Touch down at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO). Clear immigration and meet your private transfer driver in the arrivals terminal for a scenic 45-minute drive past coffee estates to your hotel in Arusha, set at the base of Mount Meru.

In the late afternoon, your lead certified mountain guide conducts an in-depth pre-climb expedition briefing, health check, and gear inspection. Rent any missing cold-weather alpine clothing, pack your 15 kg porter duffel bag, and enjoy an early dinner before a deep, restorative sleep.

  • Accommodation: Hotel in Arusha (Bed, Breakfast & Dinner)
  • Elevation: ~1,400 meters (4,593 feet)

Day 2: Arusha to Machame Gate (1,640m) – Hike to Machame Camp (2,835m)

  • Trekking Distance: ~11 km (6.8 miles)
  • Hiking Time: 5–6 hours
  • Elevation Gain: 1,195 meters (3,920 feet)
  • Vegetation Zone: Montane Rainforest

Fuel up with an energizing hot breakfast before driving through bustling Chagga farming settlements to Machame Gate (1,640m) on Kilimanjaro’s south-western slopes. While guides complete park permits with the Kilimanjaro National Park Authority (KINAPA), meet your personal mountain support crew.

Step onto the winding, moss-draped forest trail. Towering ancient trees, wild ferns, and hanging lichens form a misty canopy where black-and-white colobus monkeys and emerald turacos forage. Set an easy, deliberate pace—practicing the mountain’s core survival principle: “pole pole” (slowly, slowly). Arrive at Machame Camp (2,835m) near the upper forest boundary for hot washing water, steaming tea, and your first chef-prepared camp dinner.

  • Overnight: Machame Camp

Day 3: Machame Camp (2,835m) to Shira Cave Camp (3,750m)

  • Trekking Distance: ~5 km (3.1 miles)
  • Hiking Time: 4–6 hours
  • Elevation Gain: 915 meters (3,000 feet)
  • Vegetation Zone: Heather and Moorland

Leave the rainforest canopy behind as the gradient steepens along a rocky ridge into the sub-alpine heather zone. The trail winds through low-lying moorland scrub dotted with giant lobelias and heather bushes.

Climb onto the vast volcanic expanse of the Shira Plateau—an ancient, collapsed caldera and one of the highest alpine plateaus on Earth. The path levels out as you traverse toward Shira Camp (3,750m). Take in unobstructed, wide-angle views of Kibo’s glistening glaciers rising directly ahead, backed by stunning sunset views over Mount Meru.

  • Overnight: Shira Camp

Day 4: Shira Camp (3,750m) to Lava Tower (4,630m) – Descent to Barranco Camp (3,960m)

  • Trekking Distance: ~10 km (6.2 miles)
  • Hiking Time: 6–8 hours
  • Elevation Profile: Ascend to 4,630m at Lava Tower; descend to 3,960m at Barranco
  • Vegetation Zone: Semi-Desert / Alpine Desert to Giant Groundsels Valley

Today is the defining physiological pillar of the Machame Route, utilizing the proven high-altitude rule: climb high, sleep low.

Hike east across barren alpine scree toward the imposing volcanic plug known as Lava Tower (4,630m / 15,190ft), nicknamed the “Shark’s Tooth.” Rest at the base for a hot lunch, allowing your body to acclimatize to high altitude and thin air.

After lunch, begin a gradual descent through the striking Senecio Valley, framed by giant groundsels (Dendrosenecio kilimanjari), down to Barranco Camp (3,960m). Even though you sleep only slightly higher than the previous night, your body begins producing vital oxygen-carrying red blood cells, safeguarding your summit chances.

  • Overnight: Barranco Camp

Day 5: Barranco Camp (3,960m) – Barranco Wall – Karanga – Barafu High Camp (4,673m)

  • Trekking Distance: ~9 km (5.6 miles)
  • Hiking Time: 7–8 hours
  • Elevation Gain: 713 meters (2,340 feet)
  • Vegetation Zone: Alpine Desert

Conquer the iconic Barranco Wall (the “Breakfast Wall”) right after dawn. While visually intimidating from camp, this 257-meter volcanic rock face is a non-technical Class 2 scramble requiring basic hand-and-foot coordination. Reach the top of the wall for incredible photo ops over the southern icefields and Heim Glacier.

Descend into the glacial ravine of the Karanga Valley (the trail’s last water source), climb out, and traverse an arid, wind-blasted ridge of volcanic scree to reach Barafu Camp (4,673m / 15,331ft) by early afternoon. Perched on an exposed, rocky ridge, Barafu serves as your launchpad for the summit. Settle into your tents, hydrate aggressively, and eat an early carbohydrate-rich dinner by 5:00 PM. Prep your summit pack (headlamp, insulated water bottles, thermal layers) and rest before the midnight wake-up call.

  • Overnight: Barafu Camp

Day 6: Summit Night! Barafu (4,673m) – Uhuru Peak (5,895m) – Descent to Mweka Camp (3,100m)

  • Trekking Distance: ~5 km ascent / ~12 km descent (17 km total)
  • Hiking Time: 6–8 hours up / 5–6 hours descent
  • Elevation Profile: 1,222m gain to 5,895m; then a 2,795m descent to 3,100m
  • Vegetation Zone: Arctic Summit Zone down to Heather & Moorland

Wake up around 11:30 PM for hot ginger tea and biscuits. Fasten your gaiters, switch on your headlamps, and step into the sub-zero darkness by midnight. Climb steady, rhythmic switchbacks up steep, loose scree between the Rebmann and Ratzel glaciers.

  • Stella Point (5,756m): Reach the volcanic crater rim just as dawn paints the African horizon in brilliant gold and crimson. Climbers reaching this landmark earn the official KINAPA green certificate.
  • Uhuru Peak (5,895m / 19,341ft): Push past colossal blue glacier cliffs along the crater rim for another 45–60 minutes. Stand atop the highest point on the African continent! Celebrate at the world-famous wooden summit monument with uninterrupted panoramas across the crater and the savannah far below.

Descend the scree slopes back to Barafu Camp for a hot brunch and a two-hour rest. Pack your expedition bags and continue descending through alpine desert and moorland to Mweka Camp (3,100m). Savor your final dinner on the mountain and enjoy deep, restful sleep in the thick air.

  • Overnight: Mweka Camp

Day 7: Mweka Camp (3,100m) to Mweka Gate (1,640m) – Transfer to Arusha

  • Trekking Distance: ~10 km (6.2 miles)
  • Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
  • Elevation Loss: 1,460 meters (4,790 feet)
  • Vegetation Zone: Montane Rainforest

Enjoy your final camp breakfast surrounded by the sounds of the rainforest canopy. The descent down to Mweka Gate (1,640m) is shaded and gradual (trekking poles are highly recommended for the wet forest floor).

Sign the official park exit ledger:

  • Climbers reaching Stella Point receive an official Green Certificate.
  • Climbers summiting Uhuru Peak receive the prestigious Gold Certificate.

Join your mountain guides, camp chef, and porters for the traditional tipping ceremony and the celebratory Kilimanjaro Song. Board your private safari transfer back to your hotel in Arusha for long-awaited hot showers, a celebratory group dinner, and a good night’s rest.

  • Accommodation: Hotel in Arusha (Bed, Breakfast & Dinner)

Day 8: Lake Manyara National Park Safari (Tree-Climbing Lions & Flamingos)

  • Drive Time: ~2.5 hours from Arusha
  • Safari Focus: Tree-climbing lions, groundwater forest primates, and pink flamingo flocks

Trade mountain boots for binoculars and board your custom 4×4 Safari Land Cruiser with a pop-up photographic roof. Drive through the Great Rift Valley to Lake Manyara National Park.

Start with a game drive through lush groundwater forests fed by underground springs, home to large troops of olive baboons, blue monkeys, and bushbucks. Emerge onto open savannah floodplains and the shores of the alkaline soda lake, where thousands of lesser and greater flamingos tint the water pink. Keep your eyes locked on the branches of ancient mahogany and acacia trees for Manyara’s famous tree-climbing lions resting high above the ground.

  • Accommodation: Budget Campsite OR Mid-range Camp / Lodge OR Luxury Lodge (Full Board)

Day 9: Ngorongoro Crater Safari (Africa’s Eden & The Big Five Haven)

  • Drive Time: ~45 minutes to crater descent road
  • Safari Focus: Black rhino tracking, high-density lion prides, and crater floor wildlife

Depart early and descend 600 meters down the sheer, forested walls of the world-famous Ngorongoro Crater—the world’s largest intact, unflooded volcanic caldera and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Spend the day exploring this natural wildlife amphitheater, home to over 25,000 large mammals. This is your premier opportunity to spot the elusive, critically endangered black rhino, alongside heavy-maned black lions, spotted hyenas, cheetahs, zebras, wildebeest, and giant bull elephants carrying massive ivory tusks. Enjoy a picnic lunch at the Ngoitoktok hippo pool before ascending the crater walls in the late afternoon.

  • Accommodation: Budget Campsite OR Mid-range Camp / Lodge OR Luxury Lodge (Full Board)

Day 10: Tarangire National Park (The Elephant Sanctuary)

  • Drive Time: ~1.5 hours to Tarangire Gate
  • Safari Focus: Giant elephant herds, iconic baobab trees, and dry-season river predators

Head south into the ancient wilderness of Tarangire National Park, celebrated for its river valley and northern Tanzania’s greatest concentration of African elephants.

Navigate rolling savannahs dominated by prehistoric baobab trees—some dating back over 1,000 years. Track herds of up to 300 elephants bathing in the mud along the Tarangire River, alongside towers of Masai giraffes, elands, impalas, African wild dogs, and leopards draped over acacia limbs. In the late afternoon, retreat to your bush lodge to enjoy sundowner drinks by the campfire.

  • Accommodation: Budget Campsite OR Mid-range Camp / Lodge OR Luxury Lodge (Full Board)

Day 11: Tarangire Morning Game Drive – Transfer to Arusha

  • Drive Time: ~2.5 hours back to Arusha
  • Safari Focus: Early-morning predator activity and cultural shopping

Embark on a final sunrise game drive across Tarangire’s silale swamps and baobab plains, catching predators before the mid-day heat sets in.

After a hearty brunch, exit the park and return to Arusha. Spend the afternoon visiting local cultural heritage centers, exploring the Maasai Curio Market for wood carvings and gemstones, or simply unwinding at your hotel with a cold Kilimanjaro beer by the pool.

  • Accommodation: Hotel in Arusha (Bed,  Breakfast & Dinner)

Day 12: Farewell Tanzania – Airport Transfer & Departure

Enjoy a leisurely breakfast at your hotel with views of Mount Meru. Take advantage of final photo opportunities and packing time.

Your private safari driver transfers you directly to Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) to connect your flight to the pristine turquoise beaches of Zanzibar.

Days 13 & 14: Relaxing at the Beaches (Zanzibar – “Small Paradise on Earth”)
