8 Days Mount Kilimanjaro Climbing Lemosho Route

8 Days Mount Kilimanjaro Climbing Lemosho Route. Book the best 8 days Mount Kilimanjaro hiking/trekking adventure via Lemosho route.

The Lemosho Route is an un spoilt, remote, little used and beautiful way up to the Shira Plateau. It can either be used to gain the Western Breach route or followed by the Kibo South Circuit to ascend by the easier Barafu Route. The route is one of the few where groups may be accompanied on the first day by an armed ranger, as the forests around the Lemosho Glades are rich in buffalo, elephant and other big game animals.

Detailed Itinerary Of The 8 Days Kilimanjaro Lemosho Route

Day 1: Arrival – Moshi

Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), you will be welcomed by your guide who will transfer you to Moshi, a vibrant town located at the base of Mount Kilimanjaro. This will be your first stop before embarking on your climb. After checking into your comfortable hotel, you’ll have the rest of the day to relax and prepare for the adventure ahead. You can choose to visit the town and explore the local shops, cafes, or markets to get a feel for the surrounding culture. Your guide will provide a detailed briefing on the trek, ensuring that all necessary preparations are made for your climb. You will also have the chance to check your gear and ask any last-minute questions. This evening, enjoy a relaxing dinner and early rest as you prepare for the challenging days to come.

Day 2: Londorossi Gate (2100m) – Mti Mkubwa Camp (2750m)

After a hearty breakfast, you’ll be transferred to Londorossi Gate, located at an altitude of 2,100 meters (6,890 feet). Here, you’ll complete the registration process and meet your trekking crew. Once all formalities are complete, you will begin your ascent, passing through lush rainforests that are rich in wildlife and dense vegetation. The path is relatively gentle and scenic, allowing you to gradually acclimatize to the altitude. You will reach Mti Mkubwa Camp (2,750 meters or 9,022 feet) in about 4-5 hours. Upon arrival, you’ll have time to relax, enjoy a warm meal, and take in the peaceful surroundings. The camp is located near a large forest of towering trees, creating a tranquil environment for your first night on the mountain. As you rest, be sure to hydrate and focus on acclimatizing for the days ahead.

Day 3: Mti Mkubwa Camp (2750m) – Shira 2 Camp (3840m)

Day three begins with a warm breakfast before heading out to Shira 2 Camp (3,840 meters or 12,602 feet). The hike today will take approximately 5-7 hours, with a steady ascent from Mti Mkubwa Camp through alpine meadows and moorland. As you trek through the varied terrain, you’ll notice dramatic changes in the landscape, transitioning from rainforest to the more barren, rocky conditions of higher altitudes. The trail offers stunning views of the western side of Mount Kilimanjaro and the surrounding plains. Upon reaching Shira 2 Camp, you’ll be greeted by breathtaking vistas of the Shira Plateau. This camp is known for its panoramic views, offering a glimpse of the summit and the expansive volcanic landscape. After the hike, you’ll have time to rest, hydrate, and enjoy a nourishing dinner. This day is crucial for acclimatization, allowing your body to adjust to the higher altitude before the more demanding days ahead.

Day 4: Shira (3840m) – Lava Tower (4630m) – Barranco Camp (3950m)

Today’s trek will take you to one of the most interesting features of Mount Kilimanjaro, the Lava Tower (4,630 meters or 15,190 feet). The day begins with a relatively easy ascent from Shira 2 Camp toward the tower. The hike will take about 5-6 hours, passing through rocky terrain, desert-like vegetation, and expansive views of the mountain’s southern slopes. The Lava Tower is an impressive geological feature, formed by ancient volcanic activity, and serves as a great spot for a lunch break. Afterward, you will descend to Barranco Camp (3,950 meters or 12,959 feet), a location known for its striking views of the mountain and the famous Barranco Wall. The descent helps with acclimatization by preventing altitude sickness, and it provides an opportunity to relax and enjoy the surrounding beauty. Barranco Camp is a great place to rest as the camp is situated below the towering cliffs of the Barranco Wall, with spectacular views of the summit. You will spend the night here, readying yourself for the more challenging ascent the following day.

Day 5: Barranco Camp (3950m) – Barafu Camp (4550m)

Day five begins with a challenging but rewarding hike from Barranco Camp to Barafu Camp (4,550 meters or 14,928 feet). The trek will take around 7-8 hours, as you will first tackle the Barranco Wall, a steep section of rock that requires some scrambling and steady footing. Once you’ve passed the wall, you’ll enter a more exposed, rocky landscape, with beautiful views of the mountain and the surrounding wilderness. After climbing steadily through the alpine desert, you will reach Barafu Camp, a place that sits on the edge of the high-altitude plateau. This is your base camp before the final ascent to the summit. Upon arrival, you’ll have time to rest, hydrate, and eat a nutritious dinner. The air is thin at this altitude, so it’s important to take it easy and conserve your energy. The evening will be spent preparing for the summit attempt, which begins in the early hours of the following day.

Day 6: SUMMIT ATTEMPT, Barafu Camp (4550m) – Uhuru Peak (5895m) – Mweka Camp (3100m)

Today is the day of your summit attempt, starting with a midnight departure from Barafu Camp (4,550 meters or 14,928 feet). You will trek upwards in the darkness, with headlamps guiding the way. The route will take you through the steepest and most challenging section of the climb, with the goal of reaching Uhuru Peak (5,895 meters or 19,341 feet), the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro. The summit trek takes about 6-8 hours, and the cold, high-altitude conditions will test your endurance. As you reach Uhuru Peak, the sense of achievement will be overwhelming as you stand atop the “Roof of Africa” and enjoy unparalleled views of the surrounding glaciers and volcanic landscapes. After spending a short time at the summit for photos and celebrations, you’ll begin your descent to Mweka Camp (3,100 meters or 10,170 feet). The descent is quicker but still requires attention to avoid injury. You will reach Mweka Camp after about 5-6 hours of hiking, where you can enjoy a warm meal and a well-earned rest.

Day 7: Mweka Camp (3100m) – Mweka Gate (1980m)

After an exhausting but rewarding climb, day seven is the final leg of your descent. You will leave Mweka Camp early in the morning and begin the descent to Mweka Gate (1,980 meters or 6,496 feet), which will take about 4-5 hours. The route will take you through lush rainforest, where you can enjoy the vibrant flora and fauna that Kilimanjaro is known for. The path is less steep, allowing for a more leisurely descent. Upon arrival at Mweka Gate, you will be greeted with congratulations and receive your summit certificate if you successfully reached the top. Afterward, you’ll be transferred back to Moshi to relax, celebrate your achievement, and enjoy a well-deserved dinner. This marks the end of your Mount Kilimanjaro trek, an experience that will remain with you forever.

Day 8: Departure

On the final day of your journey, you’ll have a relaxing morning to reflect on your incredible achievement. After breakfast, you’ll be transferred back to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your onward flight. Whether you’re returning home or continuing your travels, you’ll depart with unforgettable memories of conquering Mount Kilimanjaro via the Machame Route, an accomplishment that only a few have had the privilege to achieve.
