Mount Kilimanjaro Trekking via Marangu Route & Tanzania Safari – 11 Days
Day 1: Arrival in Tanzania – Transfer to Moshi
Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), where you’ll be warmly greeted by your guide. After a brief introduction and welcome, enjoy a scenic drive to the town of Moshi, nestled at the base of Mount Kilimanjaro. This charming town is the perfect place to relax before your trekking adventure. Settle into your hotel, unpack, and prepare for the climb. After your arrival, take a leisurely walk around Moshi to acclimatize and explore the local markets, rich with vibrant culture and fresh produce. The evening is yours to enjoy a delicious dinner and unwind, knowing that tomorrow marks the start of an unforgettable adventure.
Day 2: Marangu Gate (1,980m) to Mandara Hut (2,700m)
After a hearty breakfast at your hotel, your trekking adventure begins with a transfer to Marangu Gate, the starting point for the Marangu Route. Following registration and briefing, embark on a beautiful walk through the rainforest zone. This lush environment is home to a variety of wildlife, including monkeys, birds, and unique plant species. Your first destination, Mandara Hut, sits at an altitude of 2,700 meters. The hike takes approximately 4-5 hours, allowing you to take in the beauty of the surroundings and gradually acclimate to the altitude. Arriving at the hut, enjoy a warm meal and relax, getting ready for the next day’s journey.
Day 3: Mandara Hut (2,700m) to Horombo Hut (3,720m)
On this day, the trek continues as you ascend to Horombo Hut, located at 3,720 meters. The route takes you through a transition from dense forest to open moorland, with stunning views of the surrounding landscape. Expect a steady climb that will take about 6-7 hours. Along the way, you’ll begin to notice the change in vegetation as you move into the alpine zone. As you reach Horombo Hut, nestled between the towering peaks of Kilimanjaro, take in the stunning panoramas and enjoy a well-earned rest. At this point, your body will start to adjust to the higher altitude, preparing for the days ahead.
Day 4: Acclimatization at Horombo Hut (3,720m)
Acclimatization is crucial as you climb higher, and today is dedicated to adjusting your body to the thinner air. Spend the day at Horombo Hut, taking short hikes around the area to help your body acclimatize. A popular option is to hike up to the Zebra Rocks, offering spectacular views of Kilimanjaro’s glaciers and the surrounding landscape. While at the hut, you’ll have time to relax, enjoy meals, and drink plenty of water to aid your acclimatization process. This day is essential for maximizing your chances of a successful summit.
Day 5: Horombo Hut (3,720m) to Kibo Hut (4,700m)
After a restful night, it’s time to continue the climb towards Kibo Hut, located at 4,700 meters. This part of the trek takes you into the high-altitude desert zone, where the landscape becomes barren and rocky. The day’s hike is challenging, with less vegetation and fewer opportunities to rest. You’ll be walking for 5-6 hours across the alpine desert, where the thin air and striking environment make you feel like you’re on another planet. Kibo Hut is the final stop before your summit attempt, and upon arrival, you’ll have time to rest, hydrate, and prepare for the challenging ascent to Uhuru Peak. An early dinner and rest are vital to recharge before the summit day.
Day 6: Summit Day – Kibo Hut (4,700m) to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) to Horombo Hut (3,720m)
Today is the culmination of your Kilimanjaro adventure: the summit attempt. Starting very early (around midnight), you will begin your hike from Kibo Hut toward Uhuru Peak (5,895 meters). This challenging ascent will take you through the Gilman’s Point, at 5,681 meters, before reaching the summit. The hike is strenuous and will test your endurance, but the reward is worth every step. As you stand at Uhuru Peak, Africa’s highest point, you’ll be surrounded by breathtaking views of the glaciers and the endless expanse of wilderness below. After celebrating your success, begin the descent to Horombo Hut for an overnight rest. It’s a long day, so be sure to stay hydrated and rest as much as possible during the descent.
Day 7: Descent to Marangu Gate and Transfer to Arusha
The descent continues today, as you head back down through the same path you came up. From Horombo Hut, you’ll trek down to Marangu Gate, passing through the beautiful forest again. This part of the trek takes approximately 5-6 hours. As you descend, you’ll notice the change in vegetation as you re-enter the lush rainforest. Upon reaching Marangu Gate, you’ll receive your summit certificate, marking the successful completion of your climb. Afterward, you’ll be transferred back to Arusha for a night of relaxation, where you can reflect on your Kilimanjaro journey.
Day 8: Safari at Tarangire National Park
On the eighth day, your adventure takes you on a wildlife safari. After breakfast, drive to Tarangire National Park, famous for its elephant herds and iconic baobab trees. A full-day game drive offers opportunities to see the park’s diverse wildlife, including lions, zebras, giraffes, and various bird species. Tarangire is also known for its seasonal migrations, with herds of wildebeest and zebras often crossing the plains. After a day of thrilling wildlife encounters, you’ll head to your accommodation for a restful evening, sharing stories of your safari adventures.
Day 9: Exploring Ngorongoro Crater
Today’s journey takes you to the Ngorongoro Crater, one of the Seven Natural Wonders of Africa. The crater, often referred to as the “Garden of Eden,” is home to a wide array of wildlife, including the Big Five (lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and rhino). A full-day safari in the crater gives you the chance to witness the incredible biodiversity within this UNESCO World Heritage Site. Enjoy a picnic lunch on the crater floor surrounded by grazing herds and the magnificent landscape. After a full day of exploring, return to your lodge for a well-deserved rest and a chance to reflect on your unforgettable day.
Day 10: Serengeti National Park Game Drives
No safari experience in Tanzania is complete without visiting the Serengeti National Park, renowned for its vast savannahs and the world-famous annual Great Migration. You’ll embark on an exciting game drive, where you can expect to see an abundance of wildlife, including wildebeest, zebras, elephants, and predators such as lions, cheetahs, and leopards. Depending on the season, you may also have the chance to witness the Great Migration, an extraordinary spectacle of animals crossing the plains in search of fresh grazing grounds. After a thrilling day of game drives, return to your lodge for a restful night under the African stars.
Day 11: Departure from Tanzania
On your final day, enjoy breakfast at your lodge before being transferred to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your departure. Take a moment to reflect on the remarkable adventure you’ve had – from summiting Mount Kilimanjaro to exploring some of Tanzania’s most iconic national parks.
