11 Days Mount Kilimanjaro Marangu Route & Tanzania Safari – Day-to-Day Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival in Tanzania
Your journey begins upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, where you’ll be welcomed by your guide and transferred to your hotel in Moshi, situated at the base of Mount Kilimanjaro. Once you’ve settled in, meet your trekking guide for a detailed briefing about the climb and an equipment check. Spend the rest of the evening resting and preparing for the adventure ahead, with breathtaking views of the mountain in the background.
Day 2: Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut
Following an early breakfast, you’ll head to Marangu Gate (1,970 meters) to complete your registration and start your trek. The trail winds through a lush rainforest teeming with wildlife, including playful colobus monkeys and colorful birds. After 5-7 hours of trekking, you’ll reach Mandara Hut (2,720 meters). Here, you’ll enjoy a hot meal, relax, and acclimatize to the higher altitude.
Day 3: Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut
Today’s hike takes you through a transition from dense rainforest to open moorland, revealing sweeping views of the mountain’s unique vegetation, like giant heathers and lobelias. After 6-8 hours of trekking, you’ll arrive at Horombo Hut (3,720 meters). Settle in for the evening, taking time to recharge and adjust to the altitude in preparation for the next leg of the journey.
Day 4: Acclimatization at Horombo Hut
Acclimatization is key to a successful Kilimanjaro climb, and today you’ll take a short hike to Zebra Rocks (4,020 meters), a fascinating formation with striped patterns resembling a zebra. Enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding terrain before returning to Horombo Hut. This day allows your body to adjust to the thinner air while still exploring the stunning landscapes around you.
Day 5: Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut
Today’s trek leads you into Kilimanjaro’s stark alpine desert, a surreal landscape with little vegetation. You’ll cross the expansive Saddle, a barren stretch connecting the Mawenzi and Kibo peaks, before reaching Kibo Hut (4,700 meters) after 6-8 hours. This is your base camp for the summit attempt, so enjoy an early dinner and get plenty of rest.
Day 6: Summit Day – Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak to Horombo Hut
The most challenging yet rewarding day of the trek begins just after midnight. Equipped with headlamps and determination, you’ll ascend steep terrain to reach Gilman’s Point (5,685 meters) on the crater rim. From there, push on to Uhuru Peak (5,895 meters), the highest point in Africa. After celebrating this monumental achievement, descend back to Kibo Hut for a quick rest before continuing to Horombo Hut for the night.
Day 7: Descent to Marangu Gate and Transfer to Arusha
Your final trek takes you back through the rainforest to Marangu Gate, where you’ll receive a certificate celebrating your climb. After bidding farewell to the mountain, you’ll be transferred to Arusha for a relaxing evening at your lodge, reflecting on your incredible journey so far.
Day 8: Safari at Tarangire National Park
Kick off your Tanzanian safari adventure with a visit to Tarangire National Park, known for its vast elephant herds and iconic baobab trees. Spend the day on game drives, spotting a variety of wildlife like lions, giraffes, and zebras, as well as an impressive array of bird species. As the day winds down, retreat to a nearby lodge or tented camp for a peaceful night under the stars.
Day 9: Exploring Ngorongoro Crater
Wake up early for a drive to the Ngorongoro Crater, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Descend into the caldera for a full day of wildlife viewing, with chances to see the Big Five, as well as flamingos wading in the crater’s lakes. Enjoy a picnic lunch by a hippo pool before heading back to your accommodations on the crater rim for the evening.
Day 10: Serengeti National Park Game Drives
Journey to the Serengeti, one of Africa’s most famous wildlife destinations. Depending on the season, you may witness the Great Migration, a spectacle featuring millions of wildebeest and zebras. Spend the day exploring the endless plains, keeping an eye out for predators like lions and cheetahs. End the day at your lodge or tented camp, surrounded by the sounds of the African wilderness.
Day 11: Departure from Tanzania
After breakfast, you’ll be transferred to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your departure flight. If time allows, consider a brief cultural tour to learn about local traditions and crafts.
