Detailed Day-by-Day Lodge Safari Itinerary

Day 1: Arusha to Lake Manyara National Park – Rift Valley Wildlife Drive

  • Drive Distance: ~125 km (78 miles) | Drive Time: ~2 to 2.5 hours on smooth tarmac
  • Safari Focus: Groundwater forest primates, tree-climbing lions, and alkaline lake birdlife
  • Habitat: Underground spring-fed forest, acacia woodlands, and alkaline soda lake

Depart Arusha after breakfast, meeting your private naturalist driver-guide from Bushtroop Tours & Safaris. Board your custom 4×4 Safari Land Cruiser and drive west along the Great Rift Valley corridor to Lake Manyara National Park.

Elevate your Land Cruiser’s pop-up roof upon entry. The trail leads through groundwater forests fed by subterranean springs, home to troops of olive baboons, agile blue monkeys, bushbucks, and forest elephants. Emerge onto the grassy floodplains flanking the lake, where thousands of lesser flamingos, pelicans, and storks gather in the shallows.

Scan the horizontal boughs of umbrella acacia and mahogany trees for Manyara’s famous tree-climbing lions, a unique behavioral adaptation developed to avoid ground flies and catch cool breezes. Pause by the hippo pool to observe massive pods wallowing at close range before ascending to the lodge.

  • Accommodation: Lake Manyara Wildlife Lodge
  • Meal Plan: Picnic Lunch, Dinner

Day 2: Lake Manyara to Serengeti National Park (Central Seronera Valley)

  • Safari Focus: Highland transit, short-grass plains, and big cat tracking
  • Habitat: Montane highlands, savanna plains, and granite kopjes

Following an early breakfast, journey through the cool highland forests of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area before dropping down onto the vast golden savanna of Serengeti National Park—the Maasai “Siringet,” meaning “the place where the land moves on forever.”

Enter via the Naabi Hill gate and begin an en-route game drive into the Central Seronera Valley, the predator heartland of Africa. The Seronera River network provides year-round water, supporting permanent populations of lions, leopards resting in sausage trees, cheetahs surveying from termite mounds, and hyenas.

  • The Migration Rhythm: Depending on the season, cross paths with columns of wildebeest and zebras moving through their annual migration cycle.
  • Evening Game Drive: Savor the late afternoon golden hour tracking wildlife across the open plains before checking into your lodge built directly into the surrounding granite rock outcrops.

  • Safari Focus: Morning savanna wildlife, predator activity, and crater rim views
  • Habitat: Open savanna plains to high montane crater rim forest (2,200m)

Set out on an early morning game drive across the Seronera plains—the prime window to catch apex predators hunting before the midday heat. Return to the lodge for a warm breakfast, pack your bags, and begin your game-viewing exit toward the southeastern plains.

Cross into the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, with an optional en-route stop at Olduvai Gorge, the world-famous archaeological site where Dr. Louis and Mary Leakey unearthed hominid fossils including Homo habilis.

Ascend the steep, forested slopes of the ancient caldera, arriving at the lodge in time for lunch. Spend the late afternoon taking in views from the crater rim or relaxing in the lounge by the fireplace.

Rise early and descend 600 meters (2,000 feet) down the steep, forested caldera walls onto the floor of the world-famous Ngorongoro Crater—the world’s largest intact volcanic caldera and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Spend the morning exploring this 260-square-kilometer natural wildlife amphitheater, home to over 25,000 large mammals:

  • The Big Five: High probabilities of spotting resident lion prides, Cape buffaloes, bull elephants carrying massive tusks, leopards, and northern Tanzania’s best sanctuary for the rare black rhino.
  • Lake Magadi & Ngoitoktok: Watch large flocks of flamingos wading in the alkaline lake and enjoy a picnic lunch beside the hippo pool at Ngoitoktok Springs.

By early afternoon, ascend the caldera walls and begin your scenic drive back to Arusha.
